 :D

Just tried this link on the offchance and was surprised (and very pleased!) that the video was still there.

I have been a TT fan since 1989 but this is the first time that I have seen a full length version of one of her videos! If only she was a little bit more popular or retro-cool we might have had a DVD box set by now ;(

Am I just seeing things, or did they spell Ancient Heart wrong on the caption at the end of the video ? Must go have another look to make sure...

(Very) belated thanks for posting this anyway!

Graham

hello  :)
i'm may not be a great fan of tanita   :-[ but i love very much her smooth voice. I have a presentation to do in school, we have to choose a song and to tell about the its story, about the singer etc. I picked out "txist in my sobriety". Does anybody know more about the story of the song, why it was wrote....
thank you a lot ;)

I don't remember her exact comments, but Tanita has indicated in interviews that she was intrigued by the idea that a person could ask herself whether or not it was possible to abandon the banality of an uneventful, conformist life in order to pursue a radically different way of life, and to find reassurance in learning that such an action could be achieved through an act of will; paradoxically, this reassurance would enable the person to continue to endure the banality without taking decicive actions.

Tanita has indicated that the Philip Larkin poem Poetry of Departures was very much on her mind when she composed Twist In My Sobriety. The poem bears several strong similarities to Tanita's song in terms of content, but I feel that Tanita's style and persepctive are quite unique.

Interesting to hear about the link between Twist in my Sobriety and Poetry of Departures ... I will certainly have to track down the Larkin poem now and see if this influence is apparent!

Here is the text of Larkin's Poetry of Departures; it is rather obvious that Tanita couches her ideas in a more cryptic style than Mr. Larkin's rather brawling sensibility would seem to permit. Tanita is also far less concerned with binding her words to the near-domestic setting found in the poem. Nonetheless, the ideas behind both Tanita's song and the poem, particularly in the slightly abstract, detached way that banality is rendered.

Sometimes you hear, fifth-hand,
As epitaph:
He chucked up everything
And just cleared off,
And always the voice will sound
Certain you approve
This audacious, purifying,
Elemental move.

And they are right, I think.
We all hate home
And having to be there:
I detest my room,
It's specially-chosen junk,
The good books, the good bed,
And my life, in perfect order:
So to hear it said

He walked out on the whole crowd
Leaves me flushed and stirred,
Like Then she undid her dress
Or Take that you bastard;
Surely I can, if he did?
And that helps me to stay
Sober and industrious.
But I'd go today,

Yes, swagger the nut-strewn roads,
Crouch in the fo'c'sle
Stubbly with goodness, if
It weren't so artificial,
Such a deliberate step backwards
To create an object:
Books; china; a life
Reprehensibly perfect.
