St David's Hall
« on: July 18, 2008, 03:33:44 pm »
There's an online article on St David's Hall (Cardiff, Wales) celebrating its 25th anniversary. Here's what they wrote about Tanita performing there years ago:

1990s-2000s, Review Tickets. Over the years I’ve sat scribbling through many a fabulous performance, not to mention several grumpy Van Morrison appearances. But, for sheer comedy value, one show exceeds even the gigs of Joan Rivers and Victoria Wood. The unlikely source of hilarity was Tanita Tikaram, the droning singer-songwriter touted as Basingstoke’s female answer to Leonard Cohen. Not even Leonard would have been miserable enough to write such pretentious nonsense as Twist In My Sobriety, but Tanita got a lot of attention, mainly because she looked like a teenage Elvis in drag. But she didn’t wow Wales that night. After her first song, two old ladies in the front row got up and zipped up the aisle as fast as their thermal boots would take them. As they passed my seat, I heard one hiss to the other: “Who the hell was that girl – you told me we were coming to see Kiri Te Kanawa!”
