Analyzing Songs & Sounds from SENTIMENTAL
« on: February 27, 2005, 01:12:01 am »
Hi Everyone:

I decided to frame this one with a new topic, since our other SENTIMENTAL area has over seven pages.  I have really enjoyed all the things I have been learning about the new album and thanks to all the contributors who have shared many great items.  I used to love to talk about the songs on the old listserv and I am loving this new forum, so let's bring this forward.

After listening to SOMETHING NEW more and more times, I have to agree with Dee Dee who shared with me there is something familiar about the song.  I actually hear influences from much previous work put together in a new way.  Once thing that I wanted to share here is my thoughts about TANITA'S VOICE on this new song.  I am hearing both a NEW MATURITY and a HEIGHTENED SWEETNESS.  There is a new and lovely quality to Tanita's voice--the change is very becoming.

Thanks for reading, Patryk

I truly like "Cappuccino songs" - so don't get me wrong now. After serving some Cappuccino, now is the time for a solid, black coffee. And it doesn't mean the new material is raw, sharp or directed in any way. It just seems Tanita is far more confident without losing the blues she always had. I think new one is perfectly polished and she is absolutely sure with the things she does now (she seemed a bit lost while recording Everybody's Angel or Eleven Kinds Of Loneliness), even if it won't hit the charts. This is my opinion.

There is something about "Something New" that makes me instantly smile.

Let's not forget how frantic her recording/promoting/touring schedule was at this time in her life, with songwriting somehow accomplished simultaneously, to say nothing of the hostility she often faced in the English press. Other musicians have cracked-up under this kind of stress, or at least thrown a tantrum or two.

YOU ARE RIGHT POOR COW.  AND TOP OF EVERYTHING SHE FACED, WE MUST REMEMBER TANITA STARTED OUT IN THE BUSINESS AS A TEENAGER!  SHE CRANKED HER SECOND AND THIRD ALBUMS OUT FAIRLY QUICKLY!

SHE SHOULD PROBABLY WRITE A SONG ABOUT THIS--MAYBE THERE IS ONE ON SENTIMENTAL!!!

WHAT A WAY TO GROW UP!  TANITA ALWAYS HAD QUITE THE INTELLECT FOR ONE SO YOUNG.

I find this piece reminiscent of Only One Boy In The Crowd. Overall, this song fits perfectly into jazzy genre. It's got this subtle chord progression that displays a lot of maturity and a sense of identification with the spirit of the song. I love it. I hope the whole album will be kept in this wonderful minimalist mood, which in itself is far from basic.

YOU HAVE IT SOOOO RIGHT DEE DEE:

I THOUGHT AT FIRST THAT SOMETHING NEW REMINDED ME A BIT OF THERE'S ONLY ONE BOY IN THE CROWD.  BUT LOVE IS JUST A WORD GOES MUCH FURTHER IN THAT REMINDER.

THE JAZZ ELEMENTS YOU ARE RELATING TO ARE MESMERIZING.

LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING YOU AT A TANITA CONCERT!!   P

I allready asked in the Dutch shops for this CD, but they had no answer yet! I might be asking for the CD at Bol.com or Amazon.
